TDLR: quick reminder about our free Core Radiology Playbook webinar today (17th of August) at 11:30am (GMT+1) where we’ll cover ‘Beginning Life As A Radiology ST1: Expectations & Making The Most Of Training’.
And oh yeah, we’re now proud to offer group discounts for the Core Radiology Playbook. Specifically, if you sign up as a group of 3, we’ll offer each of you a 10% discount. Who can make up that group? Anyone really. So it could be 2 of your besties in your training programme (#radfriendshipbracelets), 2 of your pals doing radiology in another location (#radpenfriends) or 2 of your ride-or-die homies who just love radiology (#bromance)! Already signed up but now wanna make a group? Don’t stress. This also can be applied to you. Just get in touch via hello@radcast.co.uk.

Non-TDLR about the Core Radiology Playbook
Picture the scene.
It’s your first day of Clinical Radiology training. The promised lands beckon you. As you realise the moment is finally here, you begin your journey to the fabled “Radiology” department. As you do, you cannot but stare at your new ID badge as your fingers slowly caress the coveted words of “ST1 Clinical Radiology Trainee” carved into it.

Infused with conviction, you arrive to the department and open your rota. “Ok, I’m down for plain films”. Then reality hits you. Conviction turns to confusion.“Where do I start? How do I review this image? How do I write a report”? As you look aimlessly at your monitor, an opportunity to gain clarity arises. Just like how Gandalf the White first appeared in Lord of the Rings, the Two Towers (#spoilers), the post-FRCR trainee has just entered the room looking for their dosimetry badge.
Hiding the shame of disappointment from not knowing, you meekly ask “I’m a bit lost, could you help with something”? Like a supportive parent, the senior reassuringly responds with “Of course, how can I help”? As you move your mouse repeatedly over the chest X-Ray in front of you with no real purpose, you turn and ask “So what do I do”? The senior nods and pulls their ‘I appreciate your concerns OSCE face’ and replies calmingly “Just have a go”. Looking bewildered, you reply with “Yeah but where do I start”? Once again, you see the seniors ‘I’m trying to gain full marks for empathy OSCE face’. As they stand to leave, you feel this aura around them. Is it that post-FRCR glow? Or maybe it’s Maybeline? Whatever it is, you think that they will surely impart their wisdom to you just like Grand Master Oogway did for Po in Kung Fu Panda. Grabbing their scrubs and bespoke crocs for the interventional suite, the senior turns the door handle, opens the door and over their shoulder calmly replies with “You’ll pick it up as you go along”.

As the door closes, you turn back to the reporting monitor. The chest X-Ray stares back at you. After a brief second you mutter under your breath “What a load of utter bollocks” and honestly, we couldn’t agree with you more.
You see, the learning curve for radiology is steep. Some would say ‘exponential’ (#nerdalert). Not only are you having to figure out the radiological anatomy, you also have to apply physics to start understanding why you’re seeing what you’re seeing. Then to make matters worse, the cases you get won’t all be normal. Heck you may not even know what a normal scan looks like. But it doesn’t stop there. To add salt to the wound, you then need to figure out how to structure your report so that you articulate what you’ve seen and its clinical implications. Basically, sh*t hits the fan all at once and you’re left to “just have a go”.

To us, the phrase of ‘just figure it out’ is more than useless advice. Like bro, you’re not Uncle Ben. Relax with all the “with great power comes great responsibility” nonsense. Heck, if you don’t know ‘what’ you’re trying to figure out then ‘how’ can you figure it out (#mindblown)? For us, this type of advice didn’t help back when we started and it seems things haven’t changed since then. That’s why we’re proud to introduce the Core Radiology Playbook.
Simply put, the whole point of Core Radiology Playbook is to help you build solid foundations and principles when it comes to systematically reviewing & reporting the common imaging studies you’ll encounter in your initial years of training.

Now you may be asking why do I need this course as a ST1? Great question. To answer, imagine you went to the general surgical ward and asked one of the doctors “How do I do a surgical abdominal exam” and the doctor replies with “Just have a go”. Then that same doctor comes finds you doing a PR exam first before then moving on to palpating the abdomen. Yes, you’re ‘having a go’ but no. Just no. That’s so gross and also, there’s a system to do this methodically. Systems lead to success. Radiology is no different. Across 90 modules in the Core Radiology Playbook, you’ll be introduced to a systematic checklist to reviewing the common imaging modalities you’ll be expected to report. We’ll also showcase the ‘System In Action’ through both a normal and abnormal case. Finally, we go one step further and give you a reporting template for a normal case that you can build upon as you gain more experience.
All in all, through the Core Radiology Playbook we aim to support your transition into Clinical Radiology. Rather than just ‘having a go’, we showcase ‘how to have a go’ through our modules covering a breadth of topics ranging from plain films, acute CT to approaching the part 1 FRCR exam.
Honestly, we built the Core Radiology Playbook after reflecting on our own frustrations when we began radiology (no this isn’t back when colour TV didn’t exist, we aren’t that old). So many hours wasted on not knowing where to go to figure things out which could have been better spent playing Fortnight/Super Smash Bros. It shouldn’t be like this and that’s why we’ve poured months of work to get this course released (with more content and cases to be added along the way). It’s a labour of love and our dedication to give you the most support possible as you embark upon your career in radiology. So if you’re interested in establishing solid foundations, click on the button below to get access to the Core Radiology Playbook.
To kickstart the course, we’ll be running a free webinar on the 17th of August at 11:30am (GMT+1) where we’ll cover ‘Beginning Life As A Radiology ST1: Expectations & Making The Most Of Training’.
